The first episode of NXT coming from Full Sail University since NXT Takeover Chicago. We hear from Tommaso Ciampa as he explains his actions at Takeover while Roderick Strong and Kassius Ohno do battle with Sanity once more
Tommaso Ciampa makes his way to the ring on crutches with no entrance music. He calls Gargano out to the ring but obviously Gargano is not there due to his injuries. We are later told there has been no update on Johnny Wrestling’s condition. Ciampa discusses how after injuring himself just before Takeover, everyone from the fans to Gargano himself were already looking to replace Ciampa, and that the Psycho Killer is not replaceable. He says in the Ladder Match itself he heard his knee pop and knew he would be out for a long time (it seems he is set for surgery), and Ciampa decided that if he had to go away, so did Johnny. He said that Takeover was supposed to be DIY’s moment, it was meant to be ‘Our’ moment, but instead Ciampa made it “His” moment. A brilliant promo from Ciampa, justifying his actions and coming off as even more despicable than he was before. Once his ACL injury heels, Tommaso Ciampa vs Johnny Gargano is going to be Professional Wrestling at its very best
The newly crowned UK Champion Pete Dunne defeated Danny Burch in what was surprisingly a relatively competitive match. On one hand Burch put in a very strong showing and when the weekly UK show rolls around it is going to need some reasonably established guys to fill that show, however I feel Dunne could have done with an absolutely dominant display here to further establish his brutal heel persona. Either way this was a fun match.
Andrade Cien Almas suffered a shock loss to Cezar Bononi continuing the idea of Almas lacking attention and focus in the ring, rather focusing on partying. I feel there is potential in this angle for Almas but feel it needs to result in Almas coming across as incredibly dominant in the end, as he is one of the better wrestlers in NXT.
There were a few backstage segments where Ember Moon was shown being cleared by the doctors after Billie Kay & Peyton Royce made fun of her. Velveteen Dream was interviewed by Kayla but told her to fix herself up before speaking to him. There was an AOP package saying how the era of pain is over and the era of dominance has begun. It was refreshing Hideo Itami so devastated by his loss to Roode at Takeover, swearing and throwing things he was overwhelmed with emotion and it’s good to see a character care so much about a missed championship opportunity and a loss.
Roderick Strong & Kassius Ohno defeated Sanity in a solid main event which saw No Way Jose return and attack Killian Dain on the outside who was looking to cause more interference. The goal was achieved in making Roderick Strong look ‘Strong’ as he looks primed to be the next challenger to the NXT Championship. Interesting to see where WWE heads with Sanity, they seem to have been on repeat for the last several months, doing and saying the same thing over and over again.
