The WWE Universe is perfectly aware that Mr. Hustle, Loyalty, Respect, John Cena will be back on SmackDown Live on the Day of Independence of the United States of America, July 4th. But wait, he’s a free agent! So what could this possibly mean?!
We just had the reemergence of the brand split last year, but we are slowly having more and more free agents. First we had The Undertaker, now we have John Cena. Then, we just received reports that Seth Rollins was in a SmackDown house show in a loss in a match against Jinder Mahal. There are also announcements saying that Mr. Money in the Bank, Baron Corbin will face Brock Lesnar in a future Raw house show.
Remember 2011 when your Monday Night WWE Television episodes were suddenly called the Raw Supershow? This was the period where the brand split kinda ended. Superstars from Raw and SmackDown were appearing on the other show vice-versa. Is this dynamic gonna happen again anytime soon? I certainly hope not. Why did we have the brand split in the first place? So there could be separation, so there could be internal competition between the two brands! Maybe Vince was planning the ‘blurring’ of the lines from the very start so there could be easy ‘trading’ of superstars. Whatever happens, it is what it is.
But back to this whole John Cena free agency thing. I just think this is a whole big rigamarole to get John Cena have a overhyped match against the Big Dawg, Roman Reigns. However, this should be best for business as this will peak the interest of the casual fans, marks, and smarks, and will increase the WWE Network subscription in no time! If the whole Roman Reigns vs Saaaa-moa Joe or Brock Lesnar doesn’t happen, we’ll definitely get Cena vs Reigns. I honestly don’t know how the Brooklyn crowd at the Barclays Center will react from the start to the end of the Cena-Reigns match.
Brand Split, whether it may be strict or blurred; I’m pretty sure we’ll have decent 2017 WWE Content.
