One of the hottest feuds in the WWE Cruiserweight Division this year has been between champion Neville and Austin Aries. However, that rivalry has come to a permanent end with the releasing of the latter superstar.

WWE announced late Friday night that Aries had been released from his contract. They gave the following statement on their website:

WWE has come to terms on the release of WWE Superstar Austin Aries. WWE wishes Aries the best in all of his future endeavors.

Aries left the commentary table in early March after fully healing from his career-threatening eye injury. He immediately jumped into a feud with the King of the Cruiserweights, leading to a trio of title shots at WrestleMania 33, Payback and Extreme Rules.

However, since his third unsuccessful attempt to regain the championship in June, Aries has yet to make an appearance on Raw or 205 Live. Just days after his loss at Extreme Rules, Aries gave an update on his injury status in an interview with the Busted Open podcast.

“I’ve got some stuff going on, but just to be fair you could probably say that for a lot of the locker room. It’s kind of part of what we do, I don’t think anyone is ever 100%. So I got a couple things going on and obviously at this point it might be a good time to take a little break which really could consist of two days to just adjust some of those things, try and get my mind and my body right and then come back and figure out what’s gonna be next and what the direction’s gonna be.”

Following his release, Aries sent out a few tweets that seemed to indicate he was happy with the company’s decision to let him go. This shows that the release could have been of Aries’s doing and not something WWE wanted.

In his 17-year career, Aries has spent time with multiple companies, including ROH and TNA, both of which he was their World Champion.

What could this mean for A Double and his future as a professional wrestler? Could this mean the end of his career? Let us know your thoughts!
