Ever since United States Champion Kevin Owens was moved over to Smackdown Live, he has been embroiled in a feud with The Phenomenal AJ Styles. That feud took a big turn when Styles defeated Owens for the championship at a live event Friday night.
It is rare to see a WWE championship of any kind change hands in front of a house show crowd, but it is not something that has never happened. The feud between Styles and Owens certainly just got an added feature with the former WWE Champion winning the title at Madison Square Garden.
This is certainly a huge blow for the New Face of America. Not only did he drop his championship to his hated rival, but he did so at possibly the most famous arena in all of the United States.
While many would have loved to see Styles win the title at a bigger stage like Summerslam, this works for the feud because it gives it reason to extend the rivalry into the next few pay-per-views at least.
Excluding the NXT Championship, a title has not changed hands at a house show since 2012 when Primo and Epico won the Tag Team Championships from Evan Bourne and Kofi Kingston. What’s more is that a men’s singles title has not changed hands since Nunzio won the Cruiserweight Championship from Juventud Guerrera in 2005 and this has also never happened to the United States Championship.
It is going to be interesting to see what happens with the Styles and Owens feud going forward, especially with the Phenomenal One now being the Champ that Runs the Camp once again.
