A huge episode of NXT this week saw the debut of Independent star, The Infamous Bobby Fish debuting in a blockbuster match against Aleister Black. Johnny Gargano returned to NXT to address the events of NXT Takeover Chicago, while the Authors of Pain defended their NXT Tag Team Championships against Heavy Machinery.
The opening match of the night saw Independent Fan Favourite, the Infamous Bobby Fish make his NXT debut against the ever impressive Aleister Black. For those unfamiliar with Bobby Fish, he has been one of the best professional wrestlers on the independent circuit, know most for his work in Ring of Honor and for his MMA style of wrestling. The two stars put on a very technical and MMA style of matchup, but shocking it was Aleister Black who got the win. Very curious as to why someone of the calibre of Bobby Fish would lose on his debut, even to a potential megastar like Aleister Black.
Backstage Hideo Itami & Kassius Ohno get into another argument, this time over their tag team loss last week. Its likely Itami will eventually turn heel to allow this feud to propel forward but personally I would love to see Kassius Ohno go heel; the Ohno character really hasn’t taken off a many would have liked and a heel turn could be a wonderful surprise and twist.
Vanessa Borne defeats Jayme Hachey to qualify for the Mae Young Classic. It’s great seeing women actually have to qualify for the tournament.
Next week on NXT Killian Dian will go one on one with Drew McIntyre in a number one contenders match where the winner will face Bobby Roode at NXT Takeover Brooklyn for the NXT Title. Also, next week Ember Moon will face Ruby Riot.
Johnny Gargano comes to the ring and addresses his best friend Tommaso Ciampa turning on him. He says he never saw it coming but won’t let it hold him back, and that he needs to be at NXT Takeover Brooklyn regardless of what has happened. Gargano being so determined to make it to Brooklyn does a great job of showing that shows importance to NXT. This did a wonderful job of reminding everyone of what was maybe the best heel turn in a very long time. When the Psycho Killer returns, this feud is going to be beyond incredible. Johnny Wrestling came across as genuine and played his role perfectly here. A great segment.
The Authors of Pain defended their NXT Tag Team Championships against Heavy Machinery in what was billed as literally the biggest match in NXT history. The four big men battled in a hard-hitting contest. Interesting that they are not going with Heavy Machinery hunting the title on a PPV, where they go from here is uncertain as Sanity have now established themselves as AOP’s next challengers. Sanity made pages from AOP’s Book of Dominance rain from the sky which was great; this shows Sanity’s kind of mystical powers which is something they really have not established enough yet. A good title match however none the less.
