We are officially halfway through the G1 Climax. Night 9 was a big one, seeing an upset in the main event and two stand-alone leaders in each block. With Block B about to have their 5th night of tournament action, let’s see how the leaderboards are panning out.
At the start of this G1, I thought to myself that Kazuchika Okada is just so unstoppable right now, he could be the first IWGP Heavyweight Champion to win the G1 Climax since the title shot stipulation for the Tokyo Dome was added in 2012. But almost instantaneously, I shrugged off that idea and told myself I was being silly. Fast forward 45 tournament matches, and Okada is the only man in the G1 still undefeated. The opportunity presents itself tonight for him to be the first man to hit double digits as well, as he faces off against Juice Robinson in the main event of Night 10. However, in Block A, a familiar foe sits on 8 points also.
|Hiroshi Tanahashi||8||Kazuchika Okada||8|
|Bad Luck Fale||6||EVIL||6|
|Hirooki Goto||6||Kenny Omega||6|
|Tetsuya Naito||6||Michael Elgin||4|
|Togi Makabe||6||Minoru Suzuki||4|
|Zack Sabre Jr.||6||Tama Tonga||4|
|Kota Ibushi||4||Juice Robinson||2|
|Yuji Nagata||0||Satoshi Kojima||0|
Who sits atop each block but none other than Okada & Tanahashi. While Tanahashi will likely lose again, Okada hasn’t lost a singles match since his defeat to Bad Luck Fale almost a year ago in last year’s G1 (Ishii also beat him 2 days beforehand, which is awesome, #PushIshii). Now that Kenny Omega has lost a match, it is mathematically impossible for Okada to lose his group unless he suffers at least 1 draw AND 1 loss. Given he COULD draw or even lose to Kenny Omega, who will be the other man to halt the momentum of the Rainmaker? Suzuki? EVIL? Will Juice Robinson do it tonight? Or will we see Okada/Tanahashi 9 in the finals of the G1!? Let us know in the comments!
