For loyal fans of the SmackDown Live, they were rewarded with the surprise return of “The Ayatollah of Rock-and-Rollah,” Chris Jericho.
After the dumpster fire that was WWE Battleground, it was revealed that the U.S. Title match finish was not intended to go in favor of Kevin Owens. In fact, Kevin Owens completed a miracle in the betting odds. AJ Styles was HEAVILY favored to win that match. But, as we all know, Kevin Owens became the new U.S. Champion.
We come to Tuesday Night, SmackDown Live, from Richmond, VA. And rumors are backstage was a mess when it came to the U.S. Title. Kevin Owens comes down to the ring, and announces he’s once again, “our U.S. Champion.” AJ’s music hits, and he comes down to say he will get his rematch tonight. Then, like a beacon of light on a dark, dark situation we hear, “BREAK THE WALLS DOWN!” Chris Jericho has made his triumphant return to SmackDown Live, and all is right with the world again. Or is it?
In an interview with Bleacher Report back in May, Y2J had stated that it may be a long time before his actual return to WWE. However, one thing to keep in mind. The tour with Fozzy is officially on hiatus until the middle of September. That would give Jericho a month or so to do some wrestling for WWE again.
In my opinion however, Jericho does not have a place in any storyline arc. And with SummerSlam vastly approaching us, it just wouldn’t be right to take the spotlight off some great matches just to have Jericho back in the frame. I’m not disrespecting Jericho by any means, but strictly from a story teller perspective, the time is not right for the Ayatollah of Rock and Rollah to return. I honestly believe that they were trying to protect Kevin Owens last week by not making him eat a loss cleanly to AJ Styles to regain what he should never have lost.
