Let’s be honest: since the brand split a few months back, Smackdown has absolutely been the superior show. From top to bottom, the storytelling and general feel of the show has been superior to the supposed ‘flagship’ show.
On any given wrestling show, the main event title scene is what usually draws the fans in each week-the main story arc of each show comes from here. Smackdown has been consistent in its title scene with AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose and more recently John Cena. Right now on Raw, the main story doesn’t even involve the main title.
Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins are arguably the two best performers on the Raw brand, and yet are being sold as second rate to the growing animosity between Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley, as well as the whereabouts and gameplan of Triple H.
This is unfortunate for the two competitors involved, but true main event stars should be able to overcome situations such as this and draw the audience to them.
It doesn’t help that Seth Rollins is carrying a rib injury, but it feels like they are just going through the motions until Triple H returns. This diminishes the importance of the title and its prestige, which is something it is yet to build.
Adding Chris Jericho to the mix at Clash of Champions by costing Rollins may have seemed like a good idea on paper, but it didn’t feel right-it added further complication that probably wasn’t necessary. Too many moving parts can cause fans to lose interest quickly.
The heat for the feud doesn’t even need to come from a physical altercation-just have one of the competitors cut a promo and redirect the story away from Triple H, Stephanie and Foley and towards the two men busting their backsides in the ring each week over the top prize on the brand.
It also needs to be made clear reasonably soon that Seth Rollins is the number one babyface on Raw, otherwise why is anyone going to become invested in his rivalry with Kevin Owens?
Tomorrow’s edition of Raw needs to have a vast improvement in the main event angle, otherwise it will be another week we are talking about what could have been, and how the blue brand is coming out as the winner.
