The first episode of NXT from the post Takeover Brooklyn set of tapings saw Drew McIntyre address the NXT Universe and Bobby Roode returned to NXT to take on Roderick Strong. Also in action were Peyton Royce, Ruby Riot & Heavy Machinery.
Drew McIntyre addressed the NXT Universe for the first time since his NXT Championship win at NXT Takeover Brooklyn. He called out Adam Cole, Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly and challenged anyone in the locker room to step up and face him like a man. Roderick Strong answered and made clear that after his match tonight with Bobby Roode, The Messiah of the Backbreaker is coming after the NXT Champion. This really wasn’t the best promo by McIntyre and he said nothing of any substance; Strong too wasn’t the best on the microphone but to be fair he had little material to work with.
After the Iconic Duo had been insulting Ruby in the last few weeks, Ruby Riot finally got her hands-on Peyton Royce. A nice little match was had with Peyton Royce picking up the win after Billie Kay hit a big boot, the Shades of Kay, allowing Royce to hit her bridging fisherman’s suplex for the win. A nice match, hopefully they keep going with this feud as all three ladies should be featured more regularly.
Multiple things were announced for next week during the show. Asuka will return to address the NXT Women’s Championship, Lars Sullivan will be put in a three-on-one handicap match because so far he’s attacked three tag team partners, Andrade Cien Almas will look for revenge against Cezar Bononi, and Kassius Ohno will take on Hideo Itami in a No Disqualification match. Next week’s episode is going to be stacked!
Heavy Machinery got another chance to shine after a few weeks away picking up a squash win. While they are very green and slightly limited in the ring, they are a whole lot of fun and its always great to see two big guys just destroying everyone in their path. A talented team with immense potential
Roderick Strong finally vanquished his demon that was Bobby Roode in an excellent main event. A wonderful back and forth match showing the best of both men; Roode hit his Glorious DDT but Strong was able to get his foot on the ropes just like Roode did to him in previous weeks. This was a wonderful match with Roode putting over Strong in what it seems will be his last NXT match. A great main event.
After the match McIntyre came out on the ramp only to be jumped by Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish. The three men beat down the NXT Champion and then ran away through the production area, fleeing from a furious General Manager William Regal who followed them all the way out of the arena. A great move to not have too much revealed about the Ring of Honor stable, we still don’t know what they’re called or what their motives are, other than them proclaiming that it is now their NXT and that they are after the NXT Championship.
