205 Live saw Enzo Amore become the Number One Contender for Neville’s Cruiserweight Championship at the No Mercy PPV with an excellent Fatal Five-Way Main Event. TJP & Swann added another chapter to their story and former Cruiserweight Champion Akira Tozawa returned to take on Drew Gulak.
TJP defeated Ariya Daivari with Rich Swann watching on. Grade: C+. A good opening match to the show but it still seems unclear where the TJP vs Swann feud is heading, and what role Daivari has in it. Swann issued a polite challenge to TJP for a match next week after TJP’s victory. Hopefully the TJP & Swann feud can really pick up and take it to another level soon because its more than needed.
Akira Tozawa defeated Drew Gulak. Grade: B- Before the match Drew Gulak gave the crowd a PowerPoint Presentation to explain how he is going to make a better 205 Live, this was quite funny and a nice continuation from the ‘No High Flying’ gimmick he was going with Mustafa Ali. The two men put on a really good match here and it was a nice return to the ring for Akira Tozawa fresh off his Cruiserweight Championship feud loss with Neville. Good to see that WWE aren’t forgetting about Tozawa and hopefully he can move onto a meaningful feud quickly. Hopefully Gulak continues this gimmick as well as there is great potential in the contrast it provides with most of the other 205 Live Superstars.
Enzo Amore becomes the new Cruiserweight Championship Number One Contender defeating Cedric Alexander, Tony Nese, The Brian Kendrick & Gran Metalik. Grade: A- These five men put on an incredible match! An incredible four-man superplex was just one of many highlights. Cedric Alexander impressed eliminating 3-men by himself before falling victim to Enzo Amore’s underhanded tactics; a great way to build sympathy for Cedric in the future. Having Enzo win here was absolutely the correct move here, he is probably the most popular member of the 205 Live roster right now and being brand new to the division this was the clear and obvious choice. Enzo stayed on the outside to begin the match hiding and again had to resort to cheating to win; playing up the idea that Enzo has to cheat to win is intriguing as a babyface. It will be interesting to see what kind of match Enzo & Neville put together.
