NXT this week saw the first triple threat qualifying match for the Women’s Championship Fatal Four Way at NXT Takeover. Lio Rush made his official in-ring debut against the Velveteen Dream, and in an NXT Takeover rematch Andrade Cien Almas battled Johnny Gargano in a phenomenal main event.
Peyton Royce defeated Nikki Cross & Liv Morgan to Qualify for the Women’s Championship Match at NXT Takeover. Grade: B- a nice triple threat match with more character work from all three women then any serious wrestling, however still entertaining. Nikki Cross took out Liv Morgan before The Undisputed Era came out and convinced Mae Young Classic competitor Taynara Conti attack Nikki Cross fitting in nicely to their feud with Sanity allowing Peyton Royce to pick up the win. Royce improves every time she is in action so she is a welcome addition to the four-way match for the title.
Velveteen Dream defeated Lio Rush. Grade: B. Lio Rush made his in-ring debut a week and started the match with an incredibly impressive sequence, however the Velveteen Dream proved too much and got the win with the Purple Rainmaker, before mocking Aleister Black. While many may be upset with Lio Rush losing here, he impressed significantly and NXT has had a tendency recently to have new arrivals lose their first match so this really isn’t any cause for concern.
Lars Sullivan defeated Danny Burch. Grade: B- Another short but effective squash victory for Lars Sullivan here, Danny Burch put in a good fight but never really stood a chance. NXT are building Sullivan strongly, hopefully soon he can move onto a proper feud that he can win, my pick would be something with perhaps both Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch in a handicap blow-off match.
Street Profits defeated a Local Talent Tag Team. Grade: B+ The Street Profits are quickly becoming my favourite tag team right now; every time they make an appearance they are incredibly fun and entertaining. Perhaps they were a bit more silly than usual this week but nonetheless they’re just a whole lot of fun.
Andrade Cien Almas defeated Johnny Gargano. Grade: A+ This. Was. Perfect! Gargano & Almas absolutely put on a classic here, the in-ring action was brilliant with both men giving it their all. The finish was smart with Gargano locking in the Gargano Escape before Zelina Vega revealed she was wearing a DIY shirt in an attempt to distract Gargano again just like at Takeover Brooklyn. Gargano however refused to be distracted and locked it in even further trying to show that he is past DIY, however Vega got up on the apron causing enough of a distraction to allow Almas to take advantage. Gargano fought back but got caught and Almas another huge momentum building win with a brutal DDT. An unbelievable match that told an unbelievable story, what more is there to love. Gargano is so sympathetic right now and perhaps the biggest babyface in the company, and Almas showed here just how good he can really be. An amazing match all-round!
