Another huge episode of NXT saw Ember Moon, Ruby Riot & Sonya Deville battle for the right to challenge for the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT Takeover, Drew McIntyre gave a wonderful sit-down interview, and The Undisputed Era took on Sanity in a huge six-man tag team main event. Also in action were Aleister Black & Kassius Ohno.
Ember Moon defeated Ruby Riot & Sonya Deville to qualify for the NXT Women’s Championship Match at NXT Takeover. Grade: B+ An excellent match where all three women were able to shine in their own way. Sonya Deville has a huge future and hit Ruby with an incredibly vicious spear. Ruby sold an ankle or lower leg injury which Deville targeted using her MMA submissions, again playing well into her legit MMA character which allowed Ruby to look great as the brave babyface who never gave up. Ember Moon hit Deville with an eclipse as she held the submission, and then pinned Ruby for the win. A fantastic match that worked for all three women involved.
Aleister Black defeated Raul Mendoza. Grade: B. Velveteen Dream came to ringside and wore Blacks trademark jacket or vest trying to provide a distraction; however this was not enough as Black hit a huge Black Mass Kick for the win. Velveteen Dream again demanded that Aleister Black acknowledge him; this feud is hitting all the right notes!
The Iconic Duo campaign to William Regal to give Billie Kay a match to become the fourth participant in the fatal four way match at NXT Takeover for the Women’s Championship at NXT Takeover; Regal announced a Battle Royal next week between everyone who has yet to be given an opportunity.
Drew McIntyre Interview. Grade: A- Drew McIntyre told his story really effectively here speaking well of how he was released from his first run in WWE and the impact that had on him and his now wife; McIntyre made himself impossible not to love here. Zelina Vega crashed the interview challenging McIntyre to a title match on behalf of her client Andrade Cien Almas; McIntyre again reinforced that he will fight anyone at any time, but challenged Almas to have the courage to ask for a match face to face. A really great interview segment here.
Kassius Ohno defeated Cezar Bononi. Grade: C- While the match was nothing special and almost flat, a nice little win for Ohno here. He desperately needs some direction, more depth to his character and a proper feud he can sink his teeth into.
Sanity vs Undisputed Era ends in DQ after Authors of Pain return and lay waste. Grade: B. The match itself between Sanity & Undisputed Era really underwhelmed, there were nice spots more so in character & story terms than any real wrestling, which is probably a good thing given what is to come at NXT Takeover. The Authors of Pain returning here was brilliant, appearing for the first time since their shocking Tag Title loss, they absolutely destroyed Sanity while Undisputed Era kept avoiding trouble by escaping. Neither the NXT Tag Team Champions or the new Undisputed Era suffer a loss here, and Authors of Pain are back with a vengeance, fantastic stuff.
