Sunday brings around the fourth major Pay Per View in the WWE calendar and just like last year, Raw vs Smackdown has become the theme of the month. However looking back on this event last year could this years edition already pale in comparison?

Last years Survivor Series was headlined by the much anticipated return of Goldberg and whilst the match itself was a major disappointment, especially considering they had already failed at Wrestlemania 20, the hype that it generated was understandably huge. So even though the main event was a one minute squash match the entire show was anchored by the 5 on 5 mens and womens match. (Yes there was other matches like the 5 on 5 tag team match and the cruiserweight championship match but the focus of the show was definitely on the former three matches so they will be the focus)

The 5 on 5 womens match really was a decent match given their time constraints and really was a coming out party for Bayley and kept Charlotte looking strong but the mens 5 on 5 match was outstanding. They were given nearly an hour to tell their story and that is exactly what they did. From Strowman being eliminated by Ellsworth to Owens and Jericho being eliminated because of the list of Jericho to Roman spearing Shane into pieces this match had it all and it was one hour of pure action. So can this year deliver a match similar to this? The short answer is No.

The build to this years Survivor Series has been interesting to say the least. It has been one hot mess. It started with Jinder challenging Brock Lesnar in a champion vs champion match. They were trading insults and promos for 2 weeks and then Jinder lost the title to AJ Styles. So Jinder went from main eventing the show to not even being on the card. This led to more champion vs champion matches. Alexa Bliss vs Natalya, The Usos vs The Shield and Baron Corbin vs the Miz. Which they started their promos and insults until last week when The Shield lost their titles to Sheamus and Cesaro. So now we have 4 champion vs champion matches set for Sunday, 10 competitors and only 1 genuine face. Yes that’s right, 9 out of 10 competitors are heels. Old school bookers must be turning in their graves.

So along with those 4 matches we have our 2 traditional 5 on 5 matches for the men and the women as well as a cruiserweight championship match and now we have The Shield vs The New Day. Thats right, the big money match that is the official return of The Shield v the hottest tag team of the last 3 years The New Day was added 6 days before the actual show. One of the biggest matches of the year was given no build whilst other matches that were given the proper build arent even happening. Its possible that Sin Cara beats Baron Corbin on Smackdown to replace another champion on the card and I have heard rumours of Charlotte winning the title on Smackdown to make it a full 4 out 4 matches being changed within 2 weeks of the Pay Per View.

Now I know it sounds like I’m pretty negative on this Survivor Series but I can’t help but feel this way given the build and I’m sure the traditional 5 on 5 matches will be very good and I know The New Day vs The Shield match will be great. I just hope that the proper matches are given the appropriate time to tell their stories. But this show has a lot to live up to given the success of last years mens match. Will it compare? I suppose we will find out on Sunday
