As we have all seen by now, the WWE has released their list of their top 25 matches of 2017. Most of them deserve their ranking on this list, while others may have been snubbed. We all have our personal opinions. However, there is one match that does not deserve to be on this list.
That match is Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at Wrestlemania 33 listed at #15. WWE even recognizes how short it was, only being around 5 minutes in length. They also state that “a longer match does not always equal a better one”. We all know the history between Goldberg and Lesnar. From their frowned upon Wrestlemania 20 match, to Goldberg’s return at Survivor Series 2016, to Goldberg’s Universal title reign. As soon as Goldberg won the Universal Championship from Kevin Owens at Fastlane, we knew this match was coming. The match at Wrestlemania 33 was the longest match that Goldberg has had in the WWE since Wrestlemania 20. Going off of that statement, Goldberg did quite wel considering his age. However, this does not warrant this match being anywhere on the top 25 list of matches in 2017.
There are so many matches that deserve better recognition then this one. Many matches throughout the year such as from 205 Live!, Raw, Smackdown Live! and Pay Per Views all deserve more then this one. I was quite surprised when I saw this match on WWE’s list as it was the only match that stood out as being oddly placed. With all due respect, this match was a “glorified spot match” at best. It was full of power moves, false finishes, finishes, and some things breaking. We all knew the outcome and it was one of the worst world championship matches at Wrestlemania in recent history. While I do understand that this was a “send off” for Goldberg, my argument is that this match does not deserve to be on the top 25 matches list from WWE.
What do you think? Did Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at Wrestlemania 33 deserve to be on WWE’s top 25 matches from 2017? What matches do you think should have been on the list? Let me know in the comments below!
